my first idea for the making materials matter brief focuses on the idea of minimalism and optical art two artistic movements that bear many similarities but differences :-
Minimalism – uses more variety of colours and focuses more on the use of simple line drawings and shapes such as squares and rectangles, perhaps most recognised in the works of artist Sol Lewitt and Frank Stella whose work focuses on 2D images painted to look 3D and jump out at the viewer.
optical art – uses more black and white tones and differs from minimalism in the sense that the image appears to move across the screen from left to right or draw the viewer to the middle of the design and out, perhaps the most recognised in the works of artist Bridget Riley and Victor Vaserely
my aim is to produce a piece that combines the effect of optical illusion and the visual look of minimalism. At this stage I am unsure what this final piece will look like but I will experiment with materials and create my own patterns and copy parts of existing ones to gain a better perspective of what I can make before planning what the final piece will look like and all the other details.
