Speaking to Dallas the foundry technician today I discussed the plan of action for the remaining time left before exhibition.Dallas suggested that I put wire around the shape of the vessel covering my medal to give extra support during the burn out and pour part of the process, this is a safeguard due to the first time of doing a bronze pour half of the shells cracked under the pressure of the bronze being poured in.
This safeguard means that an additional two coats one of which has been done today of ceramic shell molochite are needed meaning a burnout tomorrow isnt going to happen and due to inductions in Fine Art makes things more challenging as well. However I will get to burn out the piece possibly on Friday and be bronze pouring Monday giving me the rest of the week to tidy it up and fix any problems that might have occurred. This is the results
Given the bronze process didn’t entirely go to plan first time ive reproduced the medal and modified the pieces for exhibit. this has proved challenging as I don’t want the liquid and the malachite to get caught in any gaps this time im hoping to get the two moulds finished tomorrow and on a tree and BAMS is done apart from updating the book of the new images and possibly pettina on the details of the tree and other areas on the medal. I’m hoping everyday at this stage to get something done and meet goals as this is the only way ill be able to complete the workload for the end of year.
Today with a group of fellow makers we discussed as a group with Jon our ideas for the projects that we are seeing through to completion and the progress with them. breaking it down into individual projects I summarised that :-
- Bams medal was now in Craft in the Bay but I am hoping to redo a second pour next term and have at least two cast medals in exhibition, I have spoken to Pip my head of year and Dallas that runs foundry and they are both happy in redoing the process providing it is organised in advance to ensure their is enough material left for anyone else who needs it.
- The Light project at this moment in time I am looking to make the final piece but I am not sure whether I want to go forward and enter the piece for the competition aspect mainly for confidence but more workload and deadline balance. How this will work for marking I am not sure and will have to clarify more next tem but I am hopeful this will be okay.
- Work Experience was great despite circumstances not going my way, having experience in industry was really beneficial and I hope in the end of year exhibition to show these areas of development as a continuing portfolio of work and have outcomes that highlight what I learnt from the placement.
- Faking it was really positive and the set is getting its value time wise and so far is set up for in three different display areas one of which will be down in the bay so there will be two pieces of my work in exhibition in the Bay in April wahoo.
- Make your mark ideas are minimal at the moment but I am looking to get in contact with artists to discuss ideas and such and bring this back to portfolio work, whether this will work or not I am not sure but its in its early days so fingers crossed things wont go to wrong along the way.
The medal is nearly done in most respects and requires a few hours tlc for the deadline. I’m debating putting it in for the exhibition in Craft in the Bay without any colour in the knowledge that I will most likely melt it down if possible to redo and based on recent events the bronze supply is running quite low in fact it’s run out at least twice this academic year. I realise I’ll come into big trouble in regards to other projects but it’s getting tougher so if I can pull this off why not go for it while I have the largest amount of time to do it. Whether this is possible depends on what happens tomorrow but fingers crossed I can get this done before the end of this term which is this week coming.
A bit of welding has been done on the medal but the welding machine broke before the rest could be done so im buggered in that respect but only one area that can be mostly hidden is affected by this. Based on this im pleased that the detail mostly came out but id strongly recommend and will push to get it redone in the bronze process.
As of next week I may only need to do another layer of molochite and by Tuesday I should have two bronzed trees done for a pour on Friday which will give me three choices of medal one of which will hopefully feature in Craft in the Bay in March. My only concern is whether there is enough layers on the mould as if I remember rightly including a pour monday there will be seven.
Four of which are single and three of which are double consistency liquid wise. I’m excited that im finally at this stage but being later to the game has helped me see some of the potential problems that can come with working in the media of Bronze. Such as
- When wax cools it shrinks to extent so the lettering may be inconsistent but at mould stage this happened anyone it shouldn’t be a bother to me at all.
- The weight of the wax on tree can make the medal snap it and is a pain to get back together which has happened on a few friends trees
- And there is no guarantee of the quality of the outcome so regardless whichever of the three comes out best will be the one that moves forward to Craft in the Bay
I’m not really sure what happens after this point but from what I can gather its mainly sanding,grinding and touching up the qualities of the piece. I’m looking forward to seeing the bronze Medal but sad to see the wax casts go.
I now have two layers of the thinner solution on the medal and the silica sand seems to have captured the detail of the medal nicely, hopefully this will be reflected in the end results. The only difficulty I seem to be having is trying not to remove the previous applied layer of ceramic cast material whilst applying another on top, it has been advised not to hold it in the same place but this is proving difficult as a person who cant really balance myself let alone objects I hope will not affect the outcome in the end. This is the result as of this morning. At least one more layer of the thinner solution is needed and after that at least four or possible more of the thicker ceramic material will do before I can get to the burn out and bronze pour stage.
