Work Experience Project Review

Despite not having the best of luck I really enjoyed my placement at Wild Creations and will hopefully be able to go back in the foreseeable future. I learnt many things while on placement such as when a heat gun drops dont try to grab it or you’ll regret it and you’re buggered due to the damage that can do to you. How you can make something cheaply but to a high quality look standard and how a team produces an outcome together using their individual skills.

For my exhibition like every project im including a book of ideas and sketches and such for objects id like to create through the maer processes for after graduation and would like to possibly make a model of one of the props from Jurassic world on a smaller scale to show the process of making these items. These are some of the outcomes on my visit that Wild Creations has made and has made plenty more since.

Work Experience Feedback

In comparison to the other fellow student that were in my group I dont know what the average feedback was but despite the unforeseen and rather annoying circumstances the feedback was overall satisfactory mark wise which is a 2:2 mark for context and ideas and a 2:1 for ideas which I was surprised about considering how negative the process made me feel in comparison to others and their field projects.

With more flexibility  for this academic year and the holidays in between I want to get out there more and see what I can offer as a youngish artist on the market and what better way to do that than help out and get involved with other artists and pick up some tips along the way whilst the financial benefits are in my favour.

Overall the feedback has made my future endeavours more focused and I now have to aim to keep up the quality and amount of work which so far I have achieved given a few setbacks that couldn’t be helped along the way

The Candelebras

Along with Sam I was assigned to quality control over the metal candelabra and the fake wax candles that would be placed on top of the candelabra commissioned to appear in the background of an events party. In particular with this task I saw a much moreds on process as the structure was made by freelance welders in particular Gary who has worked and know Matt the father of Wild Creations since the company first set up around 5-6 years ago. Once the piece was sprayed gold I was tasked with sanding of any lumps that may have formed in the process and realistically finish the candles.

In regards to the candles I was intrigued by the finished result, mainly because of the process that went behind it. Having known that in the props industry sometimes props are hired or bought and manipulated as a starting point, this really interested me in the sense of using cheap but high quality materials and making the object from scratch which is something that has come in handy budget wise and time wise on maker. And to create the wax melted effect was a combination of a formula known as bubble mix and resin that create a sort of yeast/bread like quality. My only wish was that I could have been more involved but realistically i understand with the circumstances why this was. Hopefully in the future I will learn how to weld and be able to get involved more in processes that due to health and safety reasons I am unable to do.

Work Experience presentation time

Now that I have presented my presentation of the past four weeks of work experience I am relieved to final be able to say what I want to say about the experience. Granted it hasn’t always been easy but what is.

Being on a formative level I hope to be able to build more contacts and placements to add to my experience that I will collate in the end of year exhibition in may 2016. If I where to redo the presentation today I would reconsider the idea of using Prezie a form of interactive PowerPoint presentation, but im glad I took the risk of trying it out mainly because in the working world that can be a downfall that you can’t easily recover from in uni time even if it goes wrong is a bonus and there is security to fall back on . Onwards and upwards for 2016

Prezi presentation style

With my presentation coming together with the 11th as the day of reckoning I have decided to take a risk and use a new form of presenting my experience from my placement  called prezi. Analyzing the presentation powerpoint I hope I will be able to do myself justice using this.

template for prezi

Given my confidence issues due to the low pitch of my voice I hope that using a interactive means of communication will make things more interesting as I fear that when the time comes it will be bland and boring and the feedback I will probably take to heart.

prezi setup

I decided to go for the Prezi template Light Bubbles, having quickly played around with this software during the week im fairly confident ive got the majority of the software licked but there will be teething troubles on the day so minimising the negative effect they may have and trying not to panic about it will be key.

Work experience evaluation

Overall despite a few problems along the way, which in my opinion has made the experience more real in the sense of the working world, and more real of what you have to do to be successful and be the best at what you do my placement was quite a complex one. I found the process easy to adapt to which I wasn’t expecting to happen due to my nerves and anxiety but I managed to get involved and help out where I was legally health and safety wise able to work. I have learnt many things from many different angles on placement such as the best way to advertise yourself as an Artist, designer and maker.

Getting involved on projects currently in transition in the workshops at the time was a really fun experience, and even though I was mainly doing the quality control aspects such as polyfilling, sanding, spray painting and making sure everything is to the satisfaction of the member I am assigned to at the time. I particularly enjoyed integrating with new people and sharing a laugh and knowledge at the same time with them plus injuring yourself on the second day really made me stand out and be remembered whatever the case whether that is good or bad I will have to see. If I was to redo this module again whether im in university or outside of it I would try and work on being more vocal which is something I have always struggled with and refine my craft and try to build up a portfolio so I can help out more and get more out of the experience than I thought I would, but in context I understand that having no knowledge or experience in this industry hence why I chose this type of company for my placement, means that companies and yourself don’t really know what you’re capable off, so gaining more experience would be the best way to move forward and be able to get involved more in what is going on but never the less has moved me in the right direction.

Realistically apart from not being able to get involved as much due to certain tasks being of limits for health and safety reasons, my only negatives are that at some points I was asked to do something by a technician and then they end up doing it and im standing their like a diff looking for things to do, But in fairness to this the makers didn’t have much work going on so they had to get involved just as much to keep themselves occupied. Nerveless the negatives didn’t really ruin the experience and despite what has been said I wish I would have been able to do more than one placement but you have to go with who responds and only one did. I have been invited back in the future when more work is brought in so I look forward to when that comes and seeing where that takes me.

The Experience

Having a rough idea of what Wild Creations does and the scale of outcomes they make I was really looking forward to starting the placement. My reasons for choosing this type of company was to gain a physical experience of what it is like working in this market. On Maker I enjoy the making the final piece the most so seeing this done in a different environment and scale will certainly be an exciting experience. Overall I have no idea what I am going to be doing but I am hoping I can do justice and start my first steps on the career ladder in the process.
